How does SSL/ TLS work?

I understand most of the terminology, but can someone explain it as if I don't even how an encryption algorithm works? Also, what is the standard used today? Is there a way to tell the difference on IE? It would be nice if it was explained in your own words, but if all else fails, a webpage would suffice.
